Sri Lanka - Elephant Release

Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home rehabilitates elephants that have been abandoned or rescued from pits and canals and is run by Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation. The young elephants are nursed and fed with artificial milk every 3 hours, fodder, grass and given proper medication until they are 4-5 years old, and are then released back into the wild.

The young elephants are nursed and fed with artificial milk every 3 hours, fodder, grass and given proper medication until they are 4-5 years old, and are then released back into the wild.

The Elephant Transit Home was established in the south-west corner of Udawalawe National Park in 1995 with the objective of rehabilitating orphaned young elephants, and so far 56 have been released back into the park.
